Our Brand: How to Convey It.

Logos

Official University logos include the wordmark, unit/wordmark combinations, Block M, Driven to Discover, Goldy, and regents seal.

All marks are reserved for official University business and may not be used to promote non-University activities or imply endorsement.

Units may not develop new logos. Existing unit logos must be phased out (as inventories are depleted) but may be repurposed as graphic elements.

Third party logos used in conjunction with University marks must be approved by the Office of University Relations. No third-party logos should be included in any official University communication without a signed agreement between the University and the outside vendor or company. Whenever possible, sponsors or collaborators should be indicated in text, not with a logo.

To download logos, see the Logos download page.

Block M

The block M is one of the best-recognized logos in the state. All campuses, colleges, departments, and other units are encouraged to use it.

  • Use the block M in addition to the wordmark, not as a substitute for it.

The block M may not be blended or incorporated into other logos except as prescribed in the wordmark combinations section.

Block M as a graphic element

University Relations (612-624-6868) must approve any design that uses the block M as a graphic element. This includes designs that:

  • Use the block M in a pattern.
  • Crop, screen, or otherwise alter the logo.

Use in print

Buffer Space

Use a buffer space equal to the height of the M's serif to separate the block M from other graphic elements or the edge of the page. Do not place type or other graphic elements on the block M.

Use in web and email

All University websites are required to use the University's web header and footer. The web header includes the block M at the upper left along with the wordmark.

Websites should not duplicate the block M in other locations on their pages.

HTML email should use either the email templates with the block M included or add the block M to the top of the email along with the wordmark. Use a buffer space equal to the height of the M's serif to separate the block M from other graphic elements or text.

Contact University Relations to request approval to use the seal.

Wordmark

The wordmark is a graphic element, not a type style. Do not type it or use it in a sentence. The wordmark may not be combined with other logos or names. One exception: the wordmark/unit combination.

Wordmark/unit combination

To include your unit’s name with "University of Minnesota," use the wordmark/unit combination. Follow the guidelines below for buffer space, placement, and so on.

Wordmark and Driven to Discover

Use the wordmark with Driven to Discover on all visual communications.

Note: Registered student groups may not use the wordmark or Driven to Discover but may use the block M and mascot marks if such use complies with the student group handbook.

The wordmark may be used with with the Block M, or with Leaning Goldy or Running Goldy. Two versions of a block M wordmark combination are available.

Buffer space

Leave a buffer space the height of the capital letter "N" between the wordmark or wordmark combination and other graphic elements or the edge of the page/screen.

Placement

Place the wordmark (or wordmark/unit combination) at the top or bottom of the page/screen, where the wordmark isn't overshadowed by other elements.

When using the wordmark and a unit name but not combining them, remember:
